Every generation of Americans seems to be larger than the previous generation. It is not about the booming population. The issue is about how much the average American weighs. Obesity is a major problem in our country. It is causing many health problems for people that are putting more stress on our healthcare system. The diseases that are associated with obesity are something that is not easily dealt with and requires a massive outlay of funds. No one is safe from the effects of being overweight. If obesity is not addressed it will continue to wreak havoc on our country.
America was founded because a group of people banded together and revolted against the rule of another country. Maybe it is time to start a food and diet revolution to cure obesity in this country. This is not going to be solved by putting on a television show that has everyone following along with the host as they go through a workout of six pack ab exercises on a Saturday morning. It is going to take a lot more effort than that. America must realize that we need to alter our thoughts about the way that we eat. We glorify food and make it a centerpiece of many gatherings. The buffet spread is the most important part of any celebration and we work for days to make sure that it is perfect. There are ways that people can spend time together that don’t have to include a buffet table. A celebration should circle around the thing that is being celebrated. When you are talking with friends, you do not have to be snacking at the buffet table.
When we consider the need to alter the way we eat, we must also alter the way the young of our country are eating. We are bombarded with fast food commercials and meals at these places are often high in fat and calories and low in nutrition. School lunch programs have grown in popularity and they are now a major source of food for the young people in the country. The guidelines that the government has set though are not as nutritious as we are led to belive The definition of what is nutritious has become very muddled. Kids have always avoided their vegetables, and teaching them this is not going to make it any easier for someone to get their kids to eat the peas that are left on the plate. Unless our kids start changing their eating habits, they will grow up and find themselves overweight only to be searching for a way to learn how to lose weight fast using some fad diet that might even cause more issues than the weight did in the first place. The issue of obesity can be addressed to the youth of our nation at an age when they are willing to listen and learn.
Our nation has a great network to get messages that are heard by almost everyone. This ability could be an important asset in changing the way that we eat. Knowledge is a valuable weapon for someone to have, and if they are aware of the effects of living right and eating right, they might decide to try it. The internet is full of a wealth of information and has sites such as the biggest loser forum that are dedicated to helping people live a healthier lifestyle by sponsoring chat rooms to discuss all of the issues surrounding weight loss and eating right and exercising. With the power of advertising, a revolution can begin. Changing lives can become the rallying cry that this country needs.
The time had come to deal with the weight issue facing our country. But something must be done. It is time to realize that we are teaching our kids habits that will shorten their lives. We must teach the importance of a good diet. Restaurants and schools must stop worrying about serving the most convenient food, and start serving the right food to our children. If we can accomplish this than obesity might not be the big issue that it is now. It is okay to sometime have food as the centerpiece of a gathering. Food should not always be the most important thing about a every gatihering. This is how we need to alter the way that we think. We can’t wait any longer.
